With approximately $24.8 billion of AUM as of December 31, 2023, the Ares Secondaries Group has pioneered and innovated within secondary markets across three decades and a range of alternative asset classes, including private equity, real estate and infrastructure. Over the course of the team's 30-year history in this space, we have invested across thousands of partnership interests, driving highly differentiated and proprietary transactions through our deeply established relationships with institutional investors, fund sponsors, and market advisors. Our “thought partner” approach to investing provides bespoke and customized liquidity solutions, while capitalizing on the potential benefits of secondary investing. Such benefits potentially include enhanced diversification, smoothing of the “J-curve,” and exposure to durable assets, while seeking to deliver non-market excess returns to our investors.

We maintain a quantitative research group that focuses on generating leading industry analytics and research to support the group’s origination, underwriting and portfolio management activities. We believe that the key to enhanced performance in private markets is having superior information, and highly differentiated strategies to exploit that information. Our quantitative research group works with our deal teams, investors, counterparties and outside academics and has developed a range of data-driven software tools to drive informational advantages across our secondary market investment processes, including deal sourcing performance assessment and cashflow/liquidity forecasting. We seek to continue building upon our data-driven approach, gaining deeper understanding of risk and return structures in the private markets, with the goal of optimizing portfolio construction and investment decisions.

Private Equity

The Secondaries team launched one of the market’s first private equity secondaries fund in 1990. Founded on a heritage of innovation, we continue to maintain a differentiated investment strategy that utilizes our internal research process to provide customized transaction solutions to institutional investors and fund sponsors. We provide both LP and GP-led secondary solutions with a long-term track record for our clients and partners. Our ability to be a thought partner with our counterparties and our use of innovative structure enhances our ability to underwrite investment opportunities and seek to generate strong risk-adjusted returns.

Our private equity investment strategy seeks to:
  • Utilize our research resources to drive relationships and information advantages
  • Find or create opportunities in non-competitive channels
  • Drive investment results through underwriting, transaction structuring and portfolio construction

 

Key attributes of our private equity secondaries transactions include:

We have an established track record of providing customized private equity transaction solutions to institutional limited partners and general partners.

Our private equity secondaries team acquires interests across a range of partnership vehicles, including private equity funds, multi-asset portfolios, as well as single asset joint ventures. Transactions can be arranged as traditional sales or preferred equity structures. We have established ourselves among the most active private equity secondary investors engaged in recapitalizing and restructuring private equity funds - transactions that can address pending fund maturity, strategy change or the need for additional equity capital.

Our private equity program can also structure and invest in general partner growth and transition. These transactions can provide capital to general partners for product development or balance sheet growth, without requiring the sale of a permanent stake in their business.

Real Estate

The Secondaries team launched its first real estate secondaries fund in 1996. The firm has invested significant resources in this strategy, building a fully dedicated real estate investment team with extensive industry experience. We seek to identify inefficiencies that exist within the secondary market for real estate partnership interests and utilize our thought partnership approach to create highly customized investment solutions for GP and LP investors.

Our real estate investment strategy seeks to:
  • Utilize extensive relationships with limited partners, general partners and advisors to drive transaction flow
  • Address market inefficiencies, including supply and demand imbalances and inconsistent information quality
  • Provide highly diversified exposure to the asset class
  • Drive investment results through underwriting, transaction structuring and portfolio construction

The Secondaries team launched our infrastructure secondaries program in 2013. Our infrastructure secondaries program capitalizes on synergies with our private equity and real estate programs and leverages the depth and experience of our quantitative research group to source proprietary deal flow. We focus on partnering with market leading managers with structured investments to seek to mitigate risk and maximize alpha across our portfolio.

Infrastructure secondaries can help achieve diversification through a portfolio that provides inflation protection and exposure to uncorrelated assets. Our infrastructure strategy seeks to:
  • Utilize our research resources to drive relationships and information advantages
  • Acquire diversified portfolios of cash-flowing seasoned assets, with the potential to mitigate inflation risk
  • Address market inefficiencies, including supply and demand imbalances and inconsistent information quality

Our infrastructure team utilizes the same thought partner approach to transaction sourcing that is employed by our private equity and real estate teams.
